good all around knife?

where do I look? I'd like something that I can put in my bug out bag. I already have a leatherman tool but I'm looking to spend up to $100 bucks on a good knife that I can also carry, skin animals, cut rope, etc. Spyder Co and Benchmade were mentioned to me. Any recommendations?

It is called a Khukri and it fulfills all purpose Machete/campsite purposes. I have seen lobster tails prepared with it, can cut down any mass of trees and hold its edge, be used as a chopping axe, can't think of much that cannot be done with it.

For a sturdy, dirt cheap knife for your bug out bag, I like the Swedish Mora style knife. It's a fixed blade knife, available in a variety of styles - stainless or carbon steel blades (regular or laminated steel), wood or plastic/rubber handle.

It is NOT a saw, hatchet, Rambo assault knife with built in compass & fire starter, but it's an excellent all-around good camp knife. Using the "baton" method (place edge of blade against tree to be chopped, WHACK back of blade with a heavy stick), you can chop down 3" trees if needed.

Here's a few websites you might look at re: Mora knives:

Only thing I will say.....for canmping and maybe more punishment the JYD might and I sress MIGHT be a better choice it is a very BEEFY blade but for edc I'll go with the buck vantage pro. The vantage pro has a deep hollow grind which thins the blade down quite a bit so maybe it could chip if your hacking on bone with it but that sob is charp mang. The JYD IMVHO would take that kind of abue/use better and it is dang sharp as well

You may consider the Gerber LMF II Knife instead of a Kabar for a fixed blade all-around survival type knife.

If you're looking for a folder I'm sticking with my Benchmade D2 Griptillian.

I have 2 griptilians one is the olive green handle from cabelas the other is the mini.....the axial lock is a nice inovation....I have nothing bad to say about them.
I have the Gerber LMF 2.....don't care for it, not a bad knife but definetly not my first choice for a mid range fixed.(JMVHO)
One thing I don't like is the way it comes out of the kydex sheath, it kinda sticks and causes it to come back at your hand as it exits.the falkniven is nice but a little pricey. The old cold steel trail master for just under a $100.00 is decent at just a tad over 9" . I really like the cold steal master hunter for around $50.00 hard to top that.
Ranger makes a nice 100 dolla fixed and I'm certainly not gonna bad mouth a Kabar.

Used to be lots of good carbon bladed kitchen knives out there for a buck or less at the thrift stores, yard sales etc. I regrind slowly to the shape and length of blade I want then sharpen, and also groove the handles on the grinder[recreateing Ka-Bars].

In a pinch you can quickly resharpen them on next to any old rock, not something you can do with sh!tty stainless.

You can sharpen knives quite nicely on the bottom of a coffee mug or any ceramic , you want to use the part that's not glazed.

This guy calls himself "a dead cow doctor", so his essay talks a lot about scalpels. Still it is a rather complete introduction to knives. If you read far enough you will begin to realize that every knife is a special purpose tool, even if the special purpose happens to be called "general purpose".

1/2 & 1/2 blade ......go with full serrated or full plane blade.

Rat cutlery RC-6 bad ass knife for the money, I own this and the RC4 in plain edge......great molle carry system, perfect for tactical or wilderness.

Knife stuff to watch.
I'm a fan of the Cold Steel Recon Scout for outdoor use. I bought one many years ago when they were made with the "Carbon V" steel, made in the USA.

+1 on the GERBER brand. I have a couple (model names unknown). One is a true pocket sized knife. The second is a folding hunter style (I think it is a Gator). Also have some GERBER accesories like pruning shears and limb saws. It is the brand of choice for me.

I've carried pocket knives for decades and have gravitated to folders with a blade between 2-1/2 to 3", well built but about thee most important thing I want is a good blade steel. None of the 440 stainless crap. I want S30V, ATS34, 154CM or something equal. For an every day folder, I don't like carbon steels, don't want rust in my pants pocket and I live on the coast.

I like benchmade, spiderco all the good ones.

S30v, ATS-34, 154CM, D2, etc. are all different steel alloys used for knives. Each has different characteristics and you will find people who fiercely defend their chosen steel as the "best" blade steel. Things are also complicated by the fact that the heat treatment is at least as important as the type of steel used. A blade made of lower quality steel but with an excellent heat treatment will outperform a blade made from high quality steel with a poor heat treatment.

Here is a good source to start with: http://zknives.com/knives/articles/knifesteelfaq.shtml

My current daily carry is made with Japanese VG-10 steel. It will get to the "scary sharp" fairly rapidly but, most importantly, will stay like that for a long time. I'll touch it up with a ceramic stick every couple of weeks and that will keep it shaving sharp for months until I need to get the stones out again. Here's my daily knife when it was new, actually it's pretty slick.

.

I have a German auto it's ok and all but it doesn't get me all excited. Microtech makes a switch blade that you can open as a regular knife or use as a switch blade and the way it is activated can't be detected, that way cops can't bust you for it.....it's the Microtech Lightfoot LCC.
With the nice flippers and assisted openers they make now there's no need for an auto or switch blade, check out the Kershaw Ken Onion or the Tyrade, both very cool knifes, the Tyrade is a hot seller right now the Onion has been for some time.
